Tour Talk – Date Palm
This is the Date Palm, Phoenix dactylifera, one of the oldest and most important cultivated fruit trees of the dry regions of North Africa and the Middle East. It belongs to the palm family, Arecaceae, and has been grown by people for thousands of years. Its precise wild origins are difficult to determine because its history of cultivation and movement by people is so ancient. Kew records its native range from the Arabian Peninsula into parts of southern Asia.
The Date Palm develops a single tall trunk, although young shoots called suckers may arise around its base. The trunk is covered with the remains or scars of old leaf bases, giving it a rough, patterned appearance.
At the top is a crown of long, arching, feather-shaped leaves. Each frond is made up of many narrow, stiff leaflets arranged along a central stalk. The lower leaflets are often modified into sharp spines, so this is a palm best admired without reaching into the crown.
Date Palms have separate male and female plants. Male palms produce pollen, while only female palms produce dates. A female palm must receive pollen from a male plant before its flowers can develop into fruit.
In commercial groves, growers often collect pollen from selected male palms and apply it by hand to the female flower clusters. This allows a small number of male trees to pollinate many fruit-bearing females and helps ensure a reliable crop.
The fruits develop in large, heavy clusters hanging beneath the leaves. They begin green and may pass through yellow, amber, red or brown stages, depending on the variety. As they ripen, the flesh becomes softer, sweeter and richer in natural sugars.
Each date contains one long, hard seed with a distinctive groove running along one side. Hundreds of named cultivars exist, producing fruits that range from soft and moist to firm or nearly dry.
Date Palms are especially well adapted to hot, arid environments. Their roots can reach underground moisture, while their crowns tolerate intense heat and sunlight. This gave rise to the traditional description that the Date Palm grows with “its feet in water and its head in fire.”
The fruit can be eaten fresh, dried or processed into syrup, paste and other foods. The leaves, fibers, trunks and seeds have also been used for roofing, baskets, rope, fuel, animal feed and many everyday objects.
The Date Palm is therefore much more than an ornamental palm. For communities living in desert and oasis environments, it has provided food, shade, building materials and economic security for generations.
When we look at one, we are seeing a plant that helped make permanent human settlement possible in some of the hottest and driest inhabited regions of the world.
