Tour Talk – Swordbush
This distinctive Caribbean shrub is Swordbush, Phyllanthus epiphyllanthus.
At first glance, what appear to be long, narrow leaves are actually flattened green branches called phylloclades. The true leaves are extremely small and short-lived. These stiff, blade-like branches give the plant its common name, Swordbush.
Tiny flowers develop directly along the edges of the flattened branches. Because they are so small, they are easy to miss unless you look closely.
After pollination, small rounded fruits also form along those same edges. This unusual arrangement makes it appear as though the flowers and fruits are growing directly from the leaves.
Swordbush usually grows as a densely branched shrub or small tree. Its flattened green stems carry out most of the plant’s photosynthesis and help reduce water loss in dry, exposed habitats.
Phyllanthus epiphyllanthus is native to the Caribbean and is well adapted to limestone soils, strong sunlight, wind, and seasonal drought.
It may not have large flowers or colorful fruit, but its unusual sword-shaped branches make it one of those plants that becomes much more interesting once you understand what you are seeing.
