The Desert Rose is a drought-adapted, semi-succulent shrub distinguished by its swollen water-storing base, or caudex, thick branches, clusters of leathery leaves, and showy tubular flowers. It is native from western tropical Africa across parts of eastern Africa to the Arabian Peninsula, where it grows principally in desert and dry-shrubland habitats.
Its seasonal behavior is strongly influenced by rainfall, temperature, irrigation, pruning, and cultivar. In St. Croix’s warm climate, individual plants may not follow a sharply defined annual schedule, so the markers below should be recorded as visible stages rather than assigned to fixed months.
Phenological Markers
1. Dormant or Resting Stage
The plant shows little or no active growth.
Look for:
- Few leaves or complete leaf loss
- Bare branch tips
- Firm, swollen caudex and branches
- No visible buds, flowers, or developing fruit
- Old leaf scars visible along the stems
Desert Rose may be drought-deciduous, shedding its leaves in response to prolonged dryness rather than cold. A leafless plant is therefore not necessarily dead or unhealthy.
2. Bud Swelling and New Shoot Initiation
Previously inactive growing points begin to enlarge.
Look for:
- Small green or reddish buds at branch tips
- Slight swelling of terminal nodes
- Tiny folded leaves emerging together
- Fresh, lighter-colored stem tissue
- Growth concentrated near the ends of branches
Photograph the same branch tip closely, as the transition from inactivity to active growth can occur quickly after rainfall or irrigation.
3. Leaf Emergence
New leaves unfold from the terminal growth points.
Look for:
- Small, soft, pale-green leaves
- Leaves tightly clustered at branch tips
- Expanding blades with visible central veins
- Tender new stems
- Older branches remaining comparatively bare
The leaves are simple, entire, somewhat leathery when mature, and generally arranged spirally or in crowded terminal clusters.
4. Leaf Expansion
The new foliage increases rapidly in size.
Look for:
- Lengthening and widening leaf blades
- Leaves changing from pale to deeper green
- Firming of leaf texture
- Increasing separation between leaves
- Extension of the new shoot
Record both the overall canopy and a close view of a representative shoot.
5. Mature Foliage
The current flush of leaves has reached full size.
Look for:
- Dark-green, firm leaves
- Smooth, entire leaf margins
- Established clusters at branch ends
- Little visible expansion between observations
- A fuller crown above the thick, exposed stems
Some flowers may appear while the plant is fully leafed, although flowering can also occur when the plant is partly or almost completely leafless. Botanical descriptions specifically note that flowers may appear before or with the leaves.
6. Floral Bud Initiation
Flower buds become visible at or near the shoot tips.
Look for:
- Small pointed buds among the terminal leaves
- Buds borne singly or in small terminal clusters
- A narrow tubular base
- Green buds beginning to show pink, red, white, or other cultivar coloration
- Several buds of different sizes developing together
At first, floral buds may resemble tightly folded new leaves. Their rounded or pointed tubular form becomes clearer as they enlarge.
7. Developing Flower Bud
The floral tube lengthens and the petals become clearly distinguishable.
Look for:
- Enlarged, elongated buds
- Increasing flower color
- Petals remaining twisted or folded at the tip
- A distinct tubular corolla
- Buds turning outward or upward before opening
A sequence of close photographs can document the characteristic unfolding of the five corolla lobes.
8. First Open Flower
The first flower in the observed flowering cycle has opened.
Look for:
- One fully expanded flower
- Four or five unopened buds nearby
- A funnel-shaped or trumpet-shaped corolla
- Five spreading corolla lobes
- A lighter or contrasting throat
Cultivated plants include many hybrids and selected forms, so flower color, size, petal number, and throat markings may differ considerably from the typical wild form.
9. Peak Flowering
The plant carries its greatest visible number of open flowers.
Look for:
- Multiple flowers open simultaneously
- Successive clusters at several branch tips
- Both open flowers and developing buds
- Frequent insect visitation
- Fallen corollas beneath the plant
In its native habitat, Adenium obesum may flower during the early dry season while leafless. Under tropical cultivation, flowering can be more irregular and may occur in repeated flushes.
For the Garden record, peak flowering is best defined by comparison with earlier and later photographs of the same specimen rather than by a predetermined flower count.
10. Flower Senescence
Individual flowers begin to age and decline.
Look for:
- Fading or darkening petals
- Wilted or curled corolla lobes
- Browning along petal edges
- Collapse of the floral tube
- Entire corollas dropping from the plant
Record whether the flower drops cleanly or whether its base remains attached and begins to enlarge.
11. Post-Flowering or Unsuccessful Fruit Set
The flower falls without producing visible fruit.
Look for:
- Flower stalk remaining briefly after corolla drop
- No swelling behind the flower
- Drying and eventual loss of the flower base
- Continued production of additional buds elsewhere
Many flowers do not produce fruit, particularly where effective pollinators are absent or where cultivated plants have reduced fertility.
12. Initial Fruit Set
Successful pollination is followed by enlargement of the paired ovaries.
Look for:
- Two small projections developing from one flower base
- Paired, narrow green structures
- Fruit initially held close together
- Persistent flower stalk
- Gradual lengthening after the corolla falls
The fruit consists characteristically of two follicles joined at the base.
This is an especially valuable marker because early fruit may be overlooked among the leaves.
13. Developing Fruit
The paired follicles lengthen and become conspicuous.
Look for:
- Two long, horn-like green pods
- Pods separating as they grow
- Smooth, firm outer surfaces
- Increasing length and thickness
- Fruit remaining attached at a common base
Although commonly called seed pods, they are botanically follicles rather than legume pods.
Measure or photograph them beside a scale when practical.
14. Fruit Maturation
The follicles stop enlarging and begin to dry.
Look for:
- Green color becoming pale green, tan, or brown
- Surface losing its glossy appearance
- Follicles becoming firmer and drier
- A longitudinal seam becoming increasingly visible
- Slight splitting beginning at one end
The paired fruits may mature at slightly different rates.
15. Fruit Dehiscence
The mature follicles split lengthwise.
Look for:
- Opening along the longitudinal seam
- Follicle walls curling apart
- Rows of seeds visible within
- Silky seed hairs beginning to expand
- Seeds loosening from the dried fruit
The follicles may open rapidly once fully dry, particularly in warm, breezy weather.
16. Seed Exposure and Dispersal
Mature seeds are released from the opened follicles.
Look for:
- Numerous slender brown seeds
- Tufts of silky hairs at both ends
- Seeds hanging temporarily within the open follicle
- Wind carrying seeds away
- Empty, fully opened fruit remains
The paired tufts of hairs assist wind dispersal. The seeds resemble those of related members of the dogbane family, including oleander.
This stage may be brief and is worth checking frequently once the follicles begin to turn brown.
17. New Seedling Establishment
Where natural germination occurs, seedlings emerge after sufficient moisture.
Look for:
- Two seed leaves, or cotyledons
- A short, thickening young stem
- The first pair or cluster of true leaves
- Seed coat or hairs remaining nearby
- Seedlings appearing in open, rapidly draining soil
Young seedlings begin developing a thickened stem base, although the pronounced caudex forms gradually.
18. Leaf Senescence
Older leaves begin to decline before being shed.
Look for:
- Yellowing of the oldest leaves
- Loss of gloss or firmness
- Brown leaf tips or margins
- Leaves drooping from lower positions in the terminal cluster
- Increasing exposure of bare stems
Leaf senescence may result from drought, seasonal rest, root stress, or the normal replacement of older foliage.
19. Leaf Fall and Return to Rest
Leaves detach and the canopy becomes sparse.
Look for:
- Fallen leaves beneath the plant
- Clean leaf scars along the stems
- Reduced shoot extension
- Fewer active growing tips
- A return to a largely leafless condition
In St. Croix, drought-induced leaf fall may be interrupted quickly by rain or irrigation, producing an incomplete or very brief resting stage.
Additional Features Worth Recording
Alongside the main phenological stage, note:
- Rainfall or prolonged dry conditions
- Presence or absence of irrigation
- Flower color and cultivar form
- Number of open flowers
- Number of developing buds
- Presence of paired follicles
- Pollinator visits
- Caterpillar or other herbivore activity
- Leaf yellowing or premature leaf drop
- Pruning or storm damage
- Changes in caudex condition
- Milky latex visible after natural injury
As a member of the dogbane family, Desert Rose contains toxic cardiac glycosides in its latex. Broken stems should not be handled unnecessarily, and sap should be kept away from the skin and eyes.
Suggested Photograph Sequence
For each observation, try to record:
- The complete plant and its overall canopy
- The swollen caudex and main branching structure
- A representative branch tip
- Leaves at their current stage
- Buds or open flowers
- Spent flowers and the flower base
- Developing or mature paired follicles
- Open follicles and seeds, when present
The most easily missed transition is likely to be spent flower → paired fruit initiation. A close photograph of the flower base after the corolla falls may reveal whether pollination has succeeded before the developing follicles become obvious.
