General Description
Pachypodium rutenbergianum is one of the largest species in the genus. It develops a thick, water-storing trunk and a broad crown of stout, repeatedly branching limbs. Mature trees may reach approximately 3–9 metres, although exceptionally old specimens can become taller.
The trunk and branches are armed with paired spines. Leaves are produced mainly in clusters near the ends of the branches. Despite its common name, it is not a palm; it belongs to the dogbane family, Apocynaceae.
Phenological Markers
1. Dormant or Leafless Stage
During a dry or resting period, the tree may lose most or all of its leaves.
What to look for:
- Progressive yellowing of older leaves
- Leaves dropping from the lower portions of terminal clusters
- Bare branch tips
- No visible extension of shoots
- Mature spines remaining after the leaves have fallen
- Trunk and branches appearing slightly less swollen during prolonged drought
- Old leaf scars becoming conspicuous on the branches
Leaflessness does not necessarily indicate that the tree is dead. It may be a normal response to seasonal dryness.
2. Bud Swelling
Growth resumes when dormant buds near the ends of the branches begin to enlarge.
What to look for:
- Small swellings forming at branch tips
- Buds becoming greener or more prominent
- Several buds enlarging together
- Early flower and leaf structures emerging from the same terminal region
- Slight expansion of the growing tip before individual leaves can be distinguished
In habitat, new growth and inflorescences may emerge at approximately the same time.
3. New Leaf Emergence
What to look for:
- Small, folded leaves emerging at the ends of branches
- Young leaves appearing pale green, bronze-green or slightly reddish
- Leaves initially held upright or close together
- Rapid elongation of the leaf blades
- Soft young spines or new stem tissue accompanying the flush
- Increasing density of foliage around the branch tips
4. Leaf Expansion and Mature Foliage
What to look for:
- Leaves becoming broader and darker green
- Leaf blades unfolding completely
- Leaves forming conspicuous terminal clusters
- New growth becoming firmer
- Full development of the leaf stalks
- A dense crown forming above the thick, spiny branches
The leaves are generally oblong to narrowly oblong and may reach approximately 10–16 centimetres in length.
5. Flower-Bud Formation
Flower clusters develop near the tips of mature branches.
What to look for:
- Rounded or elongated buds appearing among the terminal leaves
- Buds arranged in compact clusters
- Enlargement of individual flower stalks
- White petals becoming visible before the buds open
- Multiple buds at different stages within the same cluster
- Flower buds sometimes appearing while the tree is still partly or completely leafless
The relationship between flowering and leaf production should be recorded carefully because cultivated trees may behave differently from plants in Madagascar.
6. Flowering
What to look for:
- Large, white flowers opening in terminal clusters
- Five spreading or slightly asymmetrical petal lobes
- A pale yellow or yellow-green throat
- Petal margins that may appear gently ruffled or twisted
- A noticeable sweet fragrance, particularly from newly opened flowers
- Several open flowers and unopened buds within the same cluster
- Fallen white flowers beneath the tree
Flowers may be approximately 4–7 centimetres long and up to about 7 centimetres across. Habitat records indicate flowering mainly from April through August, sometimes continuing into November, but this timing should not be assumed for St. Croix.
7. Pollinator Activity
What to look for:
- Moths, butterflies, bees or other insects visiting the flowers
- Visitors inserting their mouthparts into the floral tube
- Pollen adhering to the insect
- Repeated movement between flowers
- Increased visitation during particular times of day
- Flowers remaining fresh for more than one observation period
Record the visitor, time of day, weather conditions and approximate duration of each visit whenever possible.
8. Flower Senescence
What to look for:
- White petals becoming cream, tan or brown
- Petals wilting or curling inward
- Flowers dropping from the cluster
- The floral tube drying
- Unpollinated flowers falling without producing a swelling
- A small green ovary remaining after a successfully pollinated flower fades
9. Initial Fruit Set
The fruit normally begins as two joined ovaries that develop into a paired structure.
What to look for:
- Two small green projections arising from the base of a faded flower
- Young fruits forming a narrow V shape
- One member of the pair occasionally failing to develop
- Rapid elongation of successfully developing fruits
- Remaining flower parts drying and falling away
- Several young fruit pairs forming within a former flower cluster
10. Developing Fruit
What to look for:
- Long, narrow, cigar-shaped fruits
- Paired fruits diverging at an angle
- Fruit surfaces remaining smooth and green
- Continued increase in length and diameter
- Occasional reddish colouring near the tip
- Fruit pairs becoming heavy enough to hang downward
- Unequal development within a pair
The fruits may reach approximately 16–30 centimetres in length, with unusually large fruits becoming longer.
11. Fruit Maturation
What to look for:
- Green fruits becoming duller in colour
- Colour changing from green to brown or dark brown
- Fruit walls becoming dry and firm
- A longitudinal seam becoming visible
- Slight twisting or curvature as the fruit dries
- Leaves near the fruit beginning to age or fall
Habitat observations place fruiting mainly between August and November. Garden observations will be needed to determine whether the St. Croix tree follows a similar sequence.
12. Fruit Opening
The mature fruits split lengthwise to release numerous winged or tufted seeds.
What to look for:
- The dry fruit opening along one side
- The two fruit walls curling away from one another
- Pale interior surfaces becoming visible
- Numerous seeds packed inside
- Silky hairs expanding as the fruit opens
- Empty, curved fruit valves remaining on the tree
- Seeds caught on nearby branches or vegetation
13. Seed Dispersal
What to look for:
- Seeds carrying a tuft of silky hairs
- Seeds floating away in the wind
- Loose seeds collecting beneath the canopy
- Seeds becoming trapped in spider webs or nearby plants
- Empty fruits persisting after dispersal
- Seed release increasing during dry, breezy conditions
The silky hairs act like a parachute, helping the wind carry the seeds away from the parent tree.
14. Leaf Ageing and Abscission
What to look for:
- Mature leaves becoming lighter green
- Yellowing beginning at the tips or margins
- Brown patches appearing on ageing leaves
- Leaves hanging downward before dropping
- Progressive thinning of terminal leaf clusters
- A return to a partly or completely leafless crown
It is useful to distinguish gradual seasonal leaf fall from sudden leaf loss caused by drought stress, root disturbance, wind damage or excessive moisture.
15. Stem and Trunk Changes
What to look for:
- New stem growth changing from green to grey
- Young spines darkening and hardening
- Trunk expansion following periods of rain
- Slight contraction during prolonged dry weather
- Development of new branches below damaged tips
- Flower and leaf scars accumulating on older growth
- Dead branches, soft tissue, cracking or areas of discoloration
Suggested Observation Schedule
Observe the tree at least once each month. During leaf flush, flowering, fruit development or seed dispersal, weekly observations are preferable.

- Date
- Recent rainfall or irrigation
- Percentage of crown carrying leaves
- Presence of swelling buds
- New leaf growth
- Number or abundance of flower buds
- Number or abundance of open flowers
- Flower fragrance
- Pollinator activity
- Fading or fallen flowers
- Initial fruit set
- Green developing fruits
- Brown mature fruits
- Open fruits
- Seed release
- Leaf yellowing and leaf fall
- Trunk or branch damage
Suggested Abundance Scale
Use the same simple scale for leaves, flowers and fruit:
- 0 — Absent
- 1 — Present in very small numbers
- 2 — Occasional
- 3 — Common
- 4 — Abundant
- 5 — Peak display
Probable Phenological Sequence
Dormant or leafless crown → bud swelling → new leaf and flower emergence → leaf expansion → open white flowers → pollinator visitation → paired green fruits → brown mature fruits → fruit opening → wind dispersal of seeds → leaf ageing and renewed dormancy
Some stages may overlap. Flowers may develop with the new leaf flush, and fruit may remain on the tree while leaves begin to age.
Important Safety Note
Pachypodium rutenbergianum has sharp spines and contains milky latex typical of the Apocynaceae family. The sap may irritate the skin and eyes and should not be ingested.
Do not break stems, remove flowers or handle damaged tissue without gloves and eye protection. Visitors should observe the tree without touching it.
