At first glance, this plant may look like a cactus, but it is not a cactus at all. It belongs to the spurge family, Euphorbiaceae, and is related to poinsettias and many other species of Euphorbia.

Euphorbia breviarticulata is a large succulent shrub from the dry regions of eastern Africa. It is well adapted to places where rainfall may be limited or irregular. Its thick green stems store water, while also carrying out the photosynthesis that leaves would normally perform.

You may notice that the plant has very few visible leaves. Any leaves it produces are small and short-lived, so the stems do most of the work. The branches are divided into short, angular sections with strongly toothed edges and paired spines. This unusual structure gives the plant both protection and an effective way to conserve water.

The name breviarticulata refers to its short, jointed or segmented branches. Those segments are among the best features for identifying the plant.

Although it may appear harsh and heavily armed, it produces small clusters of yellow flowering structures near the edges of its stems. What looks like a single flower is actually a specialized arrangement called a cyathium. Each cyathium contains tiny male and female flowers surrounded by nectar-producing glands.

These structures attract small insects that carry pollen from one flowering cluster to another. After successful pollination, the plant produces a three-lobed fruit capsule. As the capsule matures, it dries and may split suddenly, scattering its seeds away from the parent plant.

This method of explosive seed dispersal is common among many members of the Euphorbia family.

The plant also contains a milky white latex. This sap helps protect it from animals, but it can irritate the skin and may cause serious injury if it gets into the eyes. For that reason, this is a plant best appreciated without touching.

Euphorbia breviarticulata is an excellent example of adaptation. It has reduced its leaves, enlarged its stems, developed protective spines and produced a chemical defense—all of which help it survive in a dry and demanding environment.

When we look at a plant like this, we are reminded that beauty in nature does not always appear soft or delicate. Sometimes beauty is found in strength, endurance and the ability to survive.
