Tour Talk – Madras Thorn
This thorny tropical tree is Madras Thorn, Pithecellobium dulce. It is also known as Manila Tamarind, Guamúchil and Sweet Inga. Despite the Asian place names in some of its common names, the species is native to the tropical Americas, from Mexico through Central America to northern South America. It has since been planted and naturalized widely across Asia, Africa, the Caribbean and other tropical regions.
Madras Thorn usually grows as a small to medium-sized tree with a broad, spreading crown. It tolerates heat, drought and poor soils, and its dense growth has made it useful for shade, hedges, windbreaks and living fences.
The leaves are compound but quite small. Each leaf usually carries only two pairs of rounded or oval leaflets. At the base of the leaves are short, sharp spines, often arranged in pairs. Those thorns explain the common name and make this a tree to examine without reaching carelessly into the branches.
The flowers are small, pale greenish-white or cream and crowded into rounded heads. Numerous long stamens give each cluster a soft, powder-puff appearance. The flowers provide pollen and nectar for bees and other insects.
After flowering, the tree produces distinctive flattened pods. These often become tightly curved, twisted or coiled as they mature. They begin green and may turn pink, red or brown before splitting open.
Inside are glossy black seeds surrounded by a thick, fleshy aril. The aril may be white, pink or reddish and has a sweet-tart flavor. It is eaten fresh in several parts of the tree’s range and may also be used in drinks. The species name dulce means sweet, referring to this edible pulp.
The common name Manila Tamarind is misleading in two ways. The tree is native to the Americas rather than the Philippines, and it is not a true tamarind. Both plants belong to the legume family, but they are different species with very different fruits.
Birds, mammals and people may eat the fleshy arils and help disperse the seeds. The flowers also support pollinators, while the dense, thorny branches provide shelter for wildlife.
The tree has been used for fuel, posts, animal fodder, tanning and traditional medicine, as well as for its edible arils. However, its rapid growth, abundant seed production and ability to tolerate difficult conditions can also allow it to spread aggressively outside cultivation.
Madras Thorn is therefore a tree of strong contrasts: delicate powder-puff flowers, fiercely armed branches and twisted pods that open to reveal sweet pulp surrounding polished black seeds.
When fruit is present, the best feature to point out is the opened pod. Its bright fleshy interior and dark seeds create a display that is far more colorful than anyone might expect from such a thorny tree.
