Tour Talk – Royal Palm
This magnificent palm is the Royal Palm, Roystonea regia.
It is one of the most recognizable palms in the Caribbean, with a tall, smooth gray trunk, a bright green crownshaft, and a graceful canopy of long, arching fronds. Mature trees can reach impressive heights and often tower above the surrounding landscape.
Below the crownshaft, the palm produces large branching clusters of small creamy-white flowers. These are followed by many small fruits that change from green to reddish-purple or nearly black as they mature. Birds and bats feed on the fruits and help disperse the seeds.
The Royal Palm is native to Cuba and parts of the southeastern United States, but it has been widely planted throughout the tropics. It thrives in warm, sunny conditions and grows best where it has plenty of water and room for its extensive root system.
Its straight trunk, balanced crown, and great height give it a formal, almost architectural appearance. For that reason, Royal Palms are often planted along roads, entrances, and avenues, where a row of them creates a dramatic sense of arrival.
The name “royal” suits this palm well. Even among other tall tropical trees, it has a commanding presence.
