Tour Talk – Variegated Mahoe
This colorful small tree is the Variegated Mahoe, Hibiscus tiliaceus.
Its broad, heart-shaped leaves are patterned with green, cream, and yellow. No two leaves are exactly alike, and the pale areas make the tree appear bright even when it is not flowering.
The flowers are large and hibiscus-like. They usually open yellow with a dark red center, then gradually change to orange and reddish tones before fading. A single tree may display flowers of several colors at the same time.
After flowering, rounded seed capsules develop among the leaves.
Mahoe is naturally associated with tropical coastlines and is well adapted to heat, wind, salt spray, wet ground, and sandy soil. Its flexible branches and spreading roots help it survive in exposed coastal conditions.
The bark has traditionally provided strong fibers used for rope, cordage, mats, and other practical purposes.
This variegated form is grown mainly for its decorative foliage. With its heart-shaped leaves and flowers that change color as they age, the Variegated Mahoe provides interest throughout the year.
